October Sky is a 1999 biographical drama film based on the memoir Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam Jr. Set in 1957 in a small West Virginia coal town , the story follows Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal), who—after being inspired by the launch of the Sputnik satellite —takes up amateur rocketry to escape his expected fate in the coal mine.
